PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY COUNCIL TO HOST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TOWN HALL MEETING

October 20 “SPEAK UP – SPEAK OUT” Event at Suitland High School Features Panel Discussion and Resource Information

The Prince George’s County Council will host “Speak Up – Speak Out – It’s Everybody’s Business,” a town hall meeting focusing on ways to end Domestic Violence in Prince George’s County, Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. The Town Hall Meeting will be held at Suitland High School, 5200 Silver Hill Road in Forestville, Maryland.

The Domestic Violence Town Hall will feature presentations from Prince George’s County’s States Attorney Angela Alsobrooks; Prince George’s County Sheriff Melvin High; Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Chief Marc Bashoor; Prince George’s County Deputy Police Chief Hector Velez; Still I Rise, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Dr. Glenda Hodges; and Family Crisis Center Executive Director Sophie Ford. Resource information will be on hand during the town hall, and citizens will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comment.

Prince George’s County Council Chairman Mel Franklin (D) – District 9 says domestic violence is a serious public safety issue that needs the attention of the entire community.

“The Centers for Disease Control reports that 1 in 4 women in the U. S. are victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a pervasive issue in our communities and we cannot sweep it under the rug,” said Chairman Franklin. “October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Council is encouraging residents to ‘Speak Up and Speak Out” during this town hall meeting exploring ways we can work together – elected officials, public safety officers, nonprofit organizations, and residents – to eradicate domestic violence in our communities.”

This event is free and open to the public.
